09:51 am - Win an advance copy of MERCURY!
I was thinking of doing a basic names-from-a-hat drawing, but I'm not going to let you off that easy! Oh ho ho. Here's what you've gotta do:

Tell me about your life in 1859.

If you're 18 years old today, imagine you're 18 years old in 1859. If you're 32 today, you're 32 in 1859. What would life be like? You can choose to be historically accurate, you can make it all up, or you can go the randomly-transported-back-in-time route. But you can't be 18 years old on Middle Earth or Krypton. Regular old Earth is interesting enough.

You can draw a picture, or you can write an essay/character sketch/short story. There will be two winners chosen in both the drawn and written categories, and all winners will receive signed, personalized hardcover copies of the book.

Deadline for entries is January 4th, 2010, and I'll announce the winners on January 5th, 2010–Mercury's original pub date! You can post your submissions in the comments here, or if you're shy, e-mail them to hope@hopelarson.com.

Get cracking!

An x-ray at the Turtle Hospital on Marathon Island, Florida where a small staff cares for a never-ending
rotation of delicate, trouble-prone sea turtles.  The sea turtles of the world have evolved many fickle
and arcane habits and human activity is frankly ruinous to their lifestyle.  They survive purely on instinct,
they're not learning creatures, so at present they exist at the mercy and leisure of their human neighbors.

After a week in the Florida keys with my family I am refreshed with new purpose.  I should very soon be starting
a job more tailored to a cartoonist's lifestyle.  All I'm thinking about is writing a new short story, something I haven't done
in years.  I also have a new graphic novel in the works, but I'll draw your attention to the specifics when the time is right.
For now, enjoy a selected recollection of my trip.

10:53 pm - Another "Rewind" Post
I was reading some of my posts on Livejournal, and realized that I did not mention anything about my birthday, even though it actually was pretty fun for once. Jessica was in town about a week and a half before my actual birthday (in November) so I had my birthday party early.

The theme was "The Delicious" (my fave short film) so Sara and I dressed up as the people in pantsuits, and Jessica was the stalker from "Anna is Being Stalked" since we were watching both that night. Everyone dressed up as people from "The Delicious" and it was pretty fun and ridiculous. We also watched the rest of the short films on that DVD, "Kabluey" and played Loaded Questions late into the night. I wish a few more of my friends had been able to come, but overall it was really fun!

I'm friends with the dude that made all of those short films/movies on facebook, and I sent him a message saying I had a birthday party themed around his movies, and a link to some of the pictures. He actually sent me a message back saying how the pictures were incredible, and he actually re-posted them on his page. Pretty awesome!

10:35 pm - 2009 Meme
This is the usual meme that goes around during the New Year. Take the first sentence from the first post of each month from 2009.

Jan: It's good to know that I'm still crotchety, achy, and completely full of bullshit. (I did this same meme on this post)

Feb:
I have to start off this post by sharing some life advice my dad gave my sisters and I the other night:

1. Don't fuck with the IRS
2. Don't drink and drive
3. Make sure your girlfriend's other boyfriend/husband doesn't know where you live (or in our cases, our boyfriend's other girlfriend/wife)

Looks like I'm good to go.

March: How have I not written about going to drag brunch yet?

April: I'm so over underwear.

May: OMG.

June: I guess I should finally mention my trip to Massachusetts last month with my Mom and sister.

July: (I didn't post once in July)

Aug: Becky came to visit in the beginning of July, and it was soo awesome seeing her again!

Sept: I'm squeaky clean, every piece of clothing I have has been washed today, and I have fresh bed sheets!

Oct: (I didn't post once in October)

Nov: I met John Waters tonight!!! Details tomorrow!!!

And this post seems to be my first post for December. Fuck you 2009. You have easily been the worst year of my life, ever. You will not be missed. Here's to hoping that 2010 will be a fresh start for me and everyone else who had a shitty year.

aannddd umm I am sure theres other stuff, I can't remember right now I'm all tired.

I had a reeeally good holiday, we had the whole family around and it was just super joyous. We also went and saw Sherlock Holmes, and I ate some cheesecake. I felt sick from the cheesecake, but I am still in good spirits.

I am super blessed and it is a privilege to be in my family!

I wish I had some art for you guys, but my computers been pretty slow lately and photoshop eats up the most memory.
All I have is this doodle of a house that I had a dream about:
I drove down this long thin road (I had a friend in the car too, though I don't know who she was, she had black/dark brown hair) that was surrounded by lakes and cranberry bogs, and I drove up to this house, it was more like a hotel actually. Anyway, there were these ponds in the front of the hotel with little floating bellhop bells in the water. Me and my friend discovered that ringing the bells made the bells sink to the bottom, but open a door to the hotel. So we started pressing all the bell tops and opening all the doors, thinking it was wonderful

The scene had strange lighting that I did not take care to duplicate in the image above. It was sort of in warm shadows with sunlight creeping up near the corner of the house. The bells were all shimmery in the sunlight, floating around next to green lilypads

I remember taking a peek into one of the front doors and inside was so fancy and warm. There was a shiny checkered floor to the hotel lobby. Anyway, it was a lovely dream, I don't know if I ever went inside the hotel

ANYWAY I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOYED YOURSELVES IN SOME WAY THIS FESTIVE SEASON ♥

12:09 pm - i'm so bad at posting comics on time.
I also suck real hard at drawing with a tablet, and even though I have a scanner at home (p.rents) better than the one at home (my place) I decided to break in my new Bamboo!

here's an awful, but true comic.

11:41 am - Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas, everyone! This is another card design. I love Mucha and wanted to try doing something inspired by his art. Here it is.

I hope everyone's having a wonderful holiday season. We all celebrate it differently. I'm particularly poor this year, so I made cards and sent them out to as many people as I could manage. We also did a little baking! It's been really fun. I feel lucky to have so many good people in my life. That's what I think about at Christmas time :)

Anyway, have a good time where ever you are! I'll see you in the NEW YEAR! I have a lot to share with the readers of this here journal once I am in possession of a scanner again.
